It is a condition caused by the body’s immune system reacting to
gluten , a protein that is found in wheat, rye and barleythat results
in damage to the lining of the intestines. As a result the body cannot
absorb the nutrients in the food properly. Symptoms include, bloating,
diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness and headaches and the only treatment is a
strict gluten free diet all through life.Sometimes even oats has to be
avoided.
This condition is more common in people with Type 1 diabetes because both Type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease are auto immune diseases. 2 – 10% of people with coeliac disease will also have Type 1 diabetes.
However there is no increased risk of coeliac disease in people with Type 2 diabetes.
What are the signs?
Recurrent hypos can be a sign. When children have diabetes as well as growth problems, it may be a sign. Children and adults with Type 1 diabetes should be tested every 3 years for coeliac disease.
